Spin The Wheel, Raggedyman

4.14.2008
Ore : 3:57 PM

I, whose generation grew up watching road warriors and killer comets and all sorts of post-apocalyptic fun, am nevertheless shocked that within my lifetime I'd see the beginning of global food riots...

Remember, kids: Aim for the head!

Blackwater

10.15.2007
Ore : 8:11 AM

- If Iraq is a sovereign nation, as the Bush administration insists, can Blackwater defy the Iraqi government if it orders them to leave?

- Can aggressive (ie, offensive) defense and bald-faced lying work for Mr. Prince the way it's worked for the Bush Administration?

- Can right-wingers who are Bush fans as well as fetishizers of the troops (always in the abstract, of course -- and yes, Floppy Curt, I'm looking at you)
reconcile these two aspects of themselves in light of this administration's favoring of firms like Blackwater?

- If privateers, mercenaries, and contracters are going to continue to be an integral aspect of America's military might, can deploying them domestically, as was done after Katrina, be considered an attempt to do an end-run around The Posse Comitatus Act?

I'm sure I'll think of more, but I have to run to work...

You Do Know...

9.21.2007
Ore : 7:55 PM

...What the meta-discourse is with regards to this story, don't you?

How about Obama blowing up the Sears Tower!
It is this: "Let's please, please, please talk about anyone other than Kucinich and Edwards. They after all actually take positions on poverty. And we can't have that! I'd much rather spend our airtime talking about how Obama made a baby with Hitlery and that baby was a girl who grew to be a flight attendant who successfully landed a flight that otherwise would have ended in disaster because she's none other than Karen Black!"

My Love Is Like A Dead, Dead Rove

He's not leaving because it's getting a little to hot what with all those subpoenas and nosey investigators -- Conyers is right: quitting the White House won't shield him from any accountability. In fact, it may make him even more vulnerable. Nor is he quitting to help George's poll numbers; after all, there's only a year and a half left, and his absence won't mean shit in Rasmussen or Gallup points. Maybe he really is leaving to spend more time with his family (a highly original excuse.)

Then again, it could be gay prostitutes...

Week In Reviewish

6.09.2007
Ore : 9:11 AM

The immigration bill: Thank the invisible hand that it failed. Though it leaves a bad taste in my mouth -- you know, having to rely on the nativist/racist vote to defeat it, still... That atrocious guest worker program was nothing less than an attempt to reinstitutionalize slavery in the United States. Evil, vile, unworthy of us.

* * *

Jefferson: I won't get as vehement as mikey does (mainly 'cos I claim Cali), but I'll say this: the appearance of impropriety doesn't mean in the context of private life what it does when you're a public servant and elected official. He should resign just for that.

(Though I hope everyone notices, there's no equivalent of the "Free Scooter Libby" movement on the Left. Same thing happened with Traficant: did he commit a crime? Fine, let's step back, let justice take it's course, and if he's done wrong, let him go. That said, if Jefferson's byline on CNN had an (R), this wouldn't even have been a news story.)

* * *

I call a moratorium on the John Edwards Haircutgate/primping, "I feel pretty" "scandal". Look:

What do you have to say to that, Candy Crowley, Maureen Dowd, Wolf Blitzer?

* * *

Who the fuck is Paris Hilton, and why the fuck hasn't anyone thrown her under a bus already? Oh, right, because doing so would foster even more cable news coverage...

* * *

So far Edwards is in my number 1 spot, mainly because he talks about poverty -- no one else is doing that. Still, Obama has no red marks on his record with regards to Iraq. As for Clinton: way too centrist-corporatist-DLC for me; thanks, but I'll pass.

I Should Have Held Off On This...

6.05.2007
Ore : 9:10 AM

...Mainly because I needed to bleg of you guys for my own sake (I'm moving next week), but this is too important.

Total cutie pie in danger -- RED ALERT!!!!
HELP ADAM! SERIOUSLY!!!

Adam Kokesh needs your help. Not because he's extremely beautiful (he is, of course) but because not only did he fight in Iraq, and not only because he's now fighting for himself, but because he is ultimately fighting for our Constitutionally enumerated rights. What he is doing is for all of us. The least we can do is support him.

I figure his lawyers have several easy defenses, but what do I know? Anyway, the Marine Corps have already backed down a bit. We just need to do what we can to help his defense team make them back down so far that they'll want to crawl under a rock.

Related To Yesterday...

6.04.2007
Ore : 2:02 PM

But this is wang-free (I'm all about non-proliferation baby): Today AP, via Yahoo! give us "Bush opens Europe trip on jarring note," apparently by Terence Huntforthemostimportantpoint, AP White House Correspondent. To wit:

In a diplomatic poke in the eye [through which one purportedly may see souls] at Putin, Bush bracketed the summit with stops in the Czech Republic and Poland — the two countries where the United States wants to build a missile defense system for Europe.
My $64,000 question: Has anyone asked European countries what they want?

Bonus points if you can guess how many snarling threats Cheney fits into his phone calls to Polish and Czech leaders.

"See, I'm the guy who's solemn. Solemn is how I feel today. I'm the solemnizer."

5.28.2007
Ore : 11:45 AM

Really, MSNBC, CNN and others would have reported Bush's visit as solemn (and would have repeated the word several times during the coverage) even had he tripped at the podium and let loose his trademark shit-eating smirk throughout the solemn, solemn speech.

(And please spare me any carping about how Memorial Day -- formerly Decoration Day -- is non-partisan. Not only has the excruciating, gaping national wound that is the Bush Presidency moved way beyond the issue of left v. right, war is always about politics. Decisions to go to war, decisions to change strategy during the course of war, are all political decisions, which in a representative democracy are perfectly open to discussion and criticism -- on today of all days.)

From the Decidering Commander Guy on
AP:

President George W. Bush paid tribute Monday to America's troops -- "a new generation of fallen leaders"...
"Fallen"? Or cut down by you? This is the state of our union today: people with real leadership qualities get blown up thousands of miles from home and family, while those who have none get to rule America.

"May we always honor them, may we always embrace them and may we always be faithful to who they were and what they fought for."
"Unless they ever disagreed with me and Dick..."

How convenient that the dead can't dissent.

"This is a sovereign nation."

5.25.2007
Ore : 8:08 AM

Sorry George, but I'm pretty sure "sovereign" doesn't mean what you think it means. How sovereign can a country be when the Vice President of another country can breeze in and tell their legislature what to do?

PS Not that the U.S. could ever "win" the current occupation, but if we really want to lose spectacularly, we could alienate/detain/kill
this guy. That would guarantee failure.

You Never Promised Me A Rose Garden...

4.03.2007
Ore : 2:22 PM

CAVEAT: I was washing dishes and making my lunch for work when the Prez did his little down-home, folksy bouncy-bounce as a snarling Cheney lurked like a vampire in the wings, so I am relying here on (Cthulhu help me -- or at least, eat me last) the official White House transcript, which near as I can tell omits his crack-up about caring about the troops' and the troops' families' standards of living, to which the best replies might be "Walter Reed" and mention of food service contractors in Iraq...

Members of Congress say they support the troops. Now they need to show that support in deed, as well as in word. Members of Congress are entitled to their views and should express them. Yet debating these differences should not come at the expense of funding our troops.

Congress's most basic responsibility is to give our troops the equipment and training they need to fight our enemies and protect our nation. They're now failing in that responsibility, and if they do not change course in the coming weeks, the price of that failure will be paid by our troops and their loved ones.
It's good for him to clarify this for the umpteenth time: In George Bush's pickled, wizened little brain, the military's most important job, their most vital overarching mission, above and beyond Afghanistan or Iraq or, you know, securing our actual homeland is Operation Shield George W. Bush; silly me, not only did I think the legislature was a coequal branch of government (as opposed to a bunch of disgruntled subjects needing their job told them by The Decider), but I also thought he had Rove and other minions for that politically, and the Secret Service to cover the physical aspects of protection. But I guess the old two-pronged approach is failing to cover his peevish ass. No, any time he gets called to accountability -- any time the American people, via their duly elected representatives, demand a reckoning -- his first response is to dive behind a bunch of men and women in uniform.

I mean, it's bad enough that he plays dress-up on flight decks just outside San Diego harbor, or that any time he's low in the polls his peeps arrange a photo-op in front of bleachers full of soldiers and a ginormous American flag. Using them as a blanket to try and hide your glaringly obvious incompetence and unfitness for duty is not just low -- it's pretty fucking retarded.

His Ratings I Suppose Bear Him Out

4.02.2007
Ore : 5:42 PM

Ice, ice baby...
And remember, white people: Niall Ferguson warns us that too few of you are having babies -- and who wouldn't want an adorable little bundle of joy like the one pictured above?
And he's right, you know. I mean, about the being white. Because Glenn Beck is white -- I mean super-duper, mayo-on-Wonder Bread, blindingly white. Of all the Rightist idiot box jabberers, perhaps only John "Albino Ratboy" Gibson is whiter, and he perhaps only by virtue of FOX's poor production standards, which make every male in the studio look like he crawled out from under a rock. Prematurely gray, receding chin, and a puffy pallor that's only barely camouflaged by the studio's liberal slatherings of bronzer: Glenn Beck could make a fucking marshmallow look like Miss Teen Hawaii hosting a tanning bed convention.

More important, his soul is white. And not in the way mine is -- that is to say I am acutely aware of the privilege afforded me by society (especially when I keep my mouth shut about sexuality and politics) because of the color of my skin. No, he says, "Because if you are a white human that loves America and happens to be a Christian, forget about it, Jack. You are the only one that doesn't have a political action committee for you." He's got the "poor, put-upon me with my white man's burden" mindset down pat. In short, his soul is what many of us on the leftier side of things, whether rightly or wrongly, term "white," perhaps our own reverse racist shorthand, simply because he's a discreditable whiner -- and nobody whines more bitterly and more sputteringly than a four-eyed reactionary John Bircher with the complexion of a subterranean grub.

I do admire though how nobly he bears his isolation, minority status, and disenfranchisement: No political action committee for him, no -- he'll settle for the embrace of the Isolde-pale arms of the vast majority of the political and media establishment, and their overwhelmingly melanin-deprived corporate overlords. So thank you, but no 527's for white, heterosexual, conservative Beck. He's such a rugged individualist.

Then again, he does admit to being a Mormon. That's not a very popular religion at all, and is, let's face it, one of the whitest ever invent- excuse me, "revealed." Poor Glenn. I feel so bad for him, I just might vote for Mitt Romney. Just, you know, to balance out all the extremely poor, black, differently abled lesbians currently lording it over us and running the Western world.

Minor commentary: A list this large is overwhelming, and as such begs questions: What do we do? What is our answer in the face of such loss? The only answer I can come up with: We wash their feet and tell them we’re sorry. It’s not enough, but it’s all we can do.

At 30 I have an unusual amount of experience with death. I really shouldn’t, but here I am: I’ve lost way too many friends to suicide and murder, to ODs, to drink. Now, I’m not too fucking smart. In fact, I’m really pretty stupid. But I understand lessons when they’re taught to me, and all this loss has taught me something – specifically, that life is not to be taken lightly. Life means something.

Then again, I can’t imagine why anyone would care anyway. These are California lives. They can’t possibly mean much, right? We’re all flakes and boobs out here. What could these deaths deprive anyone of?

(Please remember, one of the greatest honors we can afford our dead is to constantly remind ourselves how much we have to live for, and how fine a thing life can be. Although I’m loathe to speak for the dead, I can be reasonably sure they’d want that.)

Eat Me

3.20.2007
Ore : 8:30 AM

I know this is terribly unscientific of me, allowing myself constantly to be pin-pricked by all this anecdotal evidence, but one can only hear of so many instances of pet food recalls and E. Coli outbreaks in the news before one's apprehension gets the better of one. So I decided to poke around...

...FSIS recently announced a sustained increase in chicken-broiler carcasses testing positive for Salmonella during 2002--2005...
Now, this is an old entry. A more recent one in the same vein can be found at their new scienceblogs home (yes, also home of pharyngula.)

The CDC's surveillance is by far the most comprehensive, and arguably the least flawed. Yet their studies are far too narrowly conceived to be of much use for this post. (Their most comprehensive reports showed now real increases between 1993-1997, and more recently. And
this one deals precisely with self-reported instances of diarrheal illenss.) Furthermore, I find their interpretations overly cautious and suspect, especially as they automatically assume that it was the switch to more active rather than passive surveillance that accounts for the apparent trend of an increase in foodborne disease outbreaks. Wild speculation, I know, but I'm convinced that there's more going on here.

Right now I am inclined to believe that incidences of food poisoning and recalls increase under Republican administrations -- inclined, but in the interest of fair-mindedness, I could be convinced otherwise if some independent staticians could review as many studies as possible and find me wrong. Nevertheless, I am deeply curious: precisely what is the causal relationship between Republican aversion to regulation and the higher percentage of injuries and fatalities, and how can we tie this all together with undisputable numbers? And what is the moral calculus that makes this okay?

Lucky Duckies Redux

3.14.2007
Ore : 2:54 PM

...Or, "The Proles Are All Right":

How can we close the gap? Well, I suppose we could round up a bunch of assembly-line workers and force them to mow the lawns of corporate vice presidents. Because the gap I'm talking about is the gap in leisure time, and it's the least educated who are pulling ahead.
Ho, ho! Take that, you underemployed mooks! (Cue multifarious conservatarian postings of "Heh, indeed.")

I mean seriously, does he think people are spending their wealth of free time taking Celebrity Cruises? Supervising the maids' dusting their first-edition Katherine Mansfield anthologies over tumblers of single malt? Does he think they can afford even a putt around the local mini-golf course?
Not bloody fucking likely. Leisure time doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot when you don't have two Reagan dimes to rub together.

But whatever helps people who don't have to scrounge around dumpsters to find recyclables sleep at night...

Baron Harkonnen To Move Headquarters To Arrakis

3.12.2007
Ore : 2:46 PM

Considering the many instances of iniquity surrounding this company, this is pretty much a stale story. Only this really struck me:

Alan Laws, an analyst at Merrill Lynch, said the move would likely help Halliburton’s position in negotiating large contracts.
They need help???
